Film Financing An Option For Diversification

James Swarbrick, partner at London-based Aegis Capital Partners LLP, is a leader in film financing. Through the Aegis Film Fund, Swarbrick has structured and managed funds for over 30 productions including popular films like The King’s Speech.

He was recently interviewed by Sona Blessing for Opalesque Radio.

According to Swarbrick, investing in films can be a low-risk way for investors to diversify their portfolio and also learn about a new market. "The reason we got into this market is that film has grown without shed for twenty years and is expected to keep growing. So while the demand is there, the finance is not there. So it creates an opportunity for us to enter the market."

Aegis aims to invest in entertainment by bringing a more business focused edge to the marketplace. "We invest primarily in secured receivables, contracts rather than box office performance so you’re only looking at sovereign risk," Swarbrick explains.

By focusing on this area of film finance, Swarbrick looks at state tax credits, or contracts and only works with distributors that have an established presence in the industry and are expected to last beyond their first round of contract payouts.
