Fund administrator SEI, along with their collaborators Greenwich Associates, has just published the fifth global survey of institutional investors in hedge funds, The Shifting Hedge Fund Landscape: Institutions Put Fund Managers to the Test.
Philip Masterson, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Development, Europe, for SEI’s Investment Manager Services division explains that the firm feels that they sit at the epicentre of a healthy proportion of the hedge fund industry. "We have an important point of view" he says.
He notes that key trends are driving the industry at the moment. "The era of the investor is about a shift in power from investment managers to investors and consultants" he says. "So the opinion of the investor is crucial."
Masterson believes that as an administrator, the administration role has fundamentally evolved from being 'a necessary evil’ to 'a true partner’ in the context of a hedge fund management business.
"As an investor support function it plays out in several ways" Masterson says. "Fundamentally our services are more and more focussed on data aggregation, governance and dissemination. We’re also increasingly involved in a due diligence perspective."
