Chicago-based Asian fund puts speed and agility in decision making and risk management before onsite presence

Chris McGuire is an expert on Asian investments. He is the founder and chief investment officer of Phalanx Capital Management, a Chicago-based Asia focused fund that specializes in convertible bonds. McGuire was recently interviewed by Greg Despoelberch for Opalesque TV.

By focusing on Asia, Phalanx runs a nighttime desk in order to provide services for its clients during Asian market hours. They utilize an absolute return multistrategy approach within the convertible bond and volatility space. McGuire notes that this type of strategy is particularly well suited to the Chicago area as there is a strong options based local talent pool.

Phalanx leverages a speed edge with little need for an onsite presence in Asia allowing them to use the expertise in Chicago effectively. "The edge for us is not visiting a company. The edge is not speaking with a CFO of a random company to determine what the financials look like. Our strength and our opportunities are based on speed and agility in decision making and managing our risk."

Around the block McGuire also uses his knowledge of working through previous financial crises to know what to look for as new crises emerge.
