'The best way of investing in emerging markets is to go looking for trouble’

Paul Macnamara is a veteran emerging markets investor. He began his career at the University of Warsaw and is now investment director for global investment firm GAM. GAM deploys a mix of investment strategies including emerging markets, and has over $60bn in AuM.

Macnamara was recently interviewed by Sona Blessing for Opalesque Radio.

An emerging market is understood to be an investment market, typically a country that operates on the lower end of the income spectrum relative to other more developed, wealthier areas. Investing in emerging markets tends to come with unique challenges compared to other markets, including legal issues, development, access and riskier types of debt.

According to Macnamara, for investors with the skill-set to invest in emerging markets, the current climate has never been better. Not only are emerging markets more mature and easier to access, but also markets that do not traditionally fall under the emerging market umbrella are starting to act like them – creating their own opportunities.
