Increasingly demanding due diligence can provide opportunities for hedge funds

Investor and operational due diligence are evolving. Once simply a cursory set of questions asked of managers, now due diligence requests often span into the hundreds of pages asking in-depth qualitative and quantitative questions. A process which is only expected to evolve further as investors seek out more transparency and assurances from managers.

A new white paper from Merlin Securities highlights the challenges faced by managers as they work to respond effectively to investor due diligence requests. According to, Patrick McCurdy, author of the white paper, partner and head of capital development for Merlin Securities, "managers need to get out in front of this by ensuring they have the systems and infrastructure in place to provide requested information to investors."

The due diligence process is the place where managers can market themselves to potential investors. The paper notes that, "in order to successfully raise capital, managers must be able to articulately convey their value proposition, the components of their performance and the risks they take to achieve that performance."

Where due diligence used to focus primarily on people, process and philosophy, investors are increasingly asking more technical quantitative questions in order to understand how managers truly operate and perform. As market conditions re......................
