Steyn: South Africa’s opportunities catch the attention of institutional investors

André Steyn is one of Africa's leading short-sellers. He is the president of Steyn Capital Management based in Cape Town, South Africa. Steyn formed Steyn Capital Management after working with blue chip hedge fund, Ziff Brothers Investments.

Matthias Knab recently interviewed him for Opalesque TV.

Africa's inefficiencies create opportunity

After working with Ziff Brothers Investments, Steyn went on to manage the foreign portfolio of Temujin Fund Management in London. It was in this role where he began investing in Africa.

Steyn recalls, "I was noticing that my hit rate on investments in Africa was significantly higher than anywhere else in the world. So I began to develop a hypothesis that the market in South Africa was a lot less efficient than other developed markets. I tested that hypothesis with Steyn Capital Management, which is an alternative asset manager focused on Africa."

So far, Steyn's hypothesis seems to be right. Steyn Capital manages two funds - a long/short fund investing in South African equities and a newly launched Pan Africa fund. The South Africa fund has won awards for hedge fund of the year in both South Africa and Africa in 2010 and was nominated again in 2011.
