Amin El Kholy Bailey McCann, Opalesque New York
Amin El Kholy is managing director of asset management at Arqaam Capital, a specialist emerging markets investment bank in Dubai. Before Arqaam, he was chief investment officer and head of asset management at Shuaa Asset Management, where he oversaw total AuM of $1.7bn.
El Kholy, was recently interviewed by Sona Blessing for Opalesque Radio.
According to El Kholy, the MENA region still provides a variety of investment opportunities despite the concerns some may have about the Arab Spring. He notes that it is important to consider the separation in the region between the North African countries and other countries such as the Levant or GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) regions. This is important because protest movements have not yet impacted the region completely. Additionally, transformation in the region was taking place before the advent of Arab democracy.
El Kholy explains, "there has been a transformation in the investment landscape in the MENA region since about 2002-03, and its a secular move. In terms of the Arab Spring, most of the changes have actually occurred in North Africa. There are potential areas of uncertainty there, including a currency reevaluation in Egypt and the aftermath of what happened in Libya but there are still opportunities."
