No European exposure, strong business sector and high commodity returns make South Africa appealing to investors

Global investors looking for new places to invest are looking at South Africa, according to the participants of our recent Opalesque South Africa Roundtable. South Africa represents the largest and most liquid market within the African investment landscape and is drawing the attention of investors looking at emerging markets or BRICS.

South Africa is home to world class hedge fund talent according to roundtable participant Francois Cilliers, CIO, Novare Investments, he expects the market to grow as investors look for return, "there is no reason why local hedge fund assets could not grow to be well in excess of R100bn or R150bn."

Emerging opportunities

As investors look to allocate capital to growth opportunities, BRICS like South Africa are gaining traction. According to Bradley Anthony,Head of Distribution & Product Strategy, Fairtree Capital, South African fund managers are starting to recognize this, "as a fund manager, you definitely need to create products which will tap into that. You need to have products which will tap into the growth opportunities north of the South African border – Sub-Saharan or Pan African funds offer opportunity sets which cannot be overlooked.
