De Coster: global reach key for equity long/short space

Alain De Coster is the cofounder of ABS, a $3.7 bn fund of funds, which specializes in the global equity long/short space. De Coster founded ABS in 2002 after spending several years working in risk management and risk trading across asset classes in Europe and the US.

He was recently interviewed by Greg Despoelberch for Opalesque TV.

De Coster started ABS with partners Laurence Russian and Guilherme do Valle. The team originally worked together at Garantia, building billion dollar long/short equity portfolios throughout the 1990s.

ABS finds opportunity investing early with global long/short equity ABS and all of its processes are solely focused on global long/short equity. De Coster points out that, when the founding team created ABS they felt that the focusing in on this area was a key differentiator: "we felt that very few people were solely focused on equity long/short, where there are so many differentiators and also where we saw the business and the opportunity set expanding globally. Meaning that, more and more markets enabled you to go long and short and managers were springing up not only in New York and London, but around the world."
