Endowment investments' pioneer Lou Moelchert takes 'contrarian' view investing in hedge funds and alternatives

Lou Moelchert, is a pioneer in the world of endowment investing. He ran the endowment at the University of Richmond for 30 years where he developed a new approach to endowment investing focusing on alternative investments which he has been investing in since the early 1980s. Moelchert served as a committee member of the Virginia Retirement System, Chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee and Chairman of the Commonfund Board of Trustees.

Currently, Mr. Moelchert is the Founder and Managing Partner of Private Advisors, a boutique investment management firm managing both private equity and hedge fund of funds investments. Private Advisors manages $3.5m split between hedge fund to funds and private equity, and has 60 employees, one third of which are equity owners of the firm. Moelchert leveraged the knowledge he gained as Chief Financial Officer at the University of Richmond to launch Private Advisors in 1997.

An Unconventional View of Risk

Moelchert gained is reputation as a pioneer in endowment investing by taking an unconventional view of risk. He was one of the first university Chief Financial Officers to incorporate alternative investments into his endowment investments. Moelchert came to this decision by examining the potential effect of fluctuations in the endowment - then 25% of the overall university budget - against the risk involved in both ......................
