Preqin survey predicts a positive year ahead for hedge funds

Preqin, suppliers of market intelligence and data to the alternatives industry, has published its report based on a survey of 70 investment consultants in private equity, private real estate, infrastructure and hedge funds.

Preqin says: "Recent years have seen the alternative investments industry experience widespread financial upheaval and regulatory changes. As a result, investment consultants play a more vital role than ever in the highly competitive fundraising markets, and understanding this group is integral for fund managers seeking to attract capital."

Understandably, given the current difficulties of the investment markets, the majority of investment consultants who consider hedge funds preferred the more established markets as those that would offer the greatest investment opportunities over the coming year. North America was the most popular with 77% and then Europe with 60%. However, next biggest block was Asia with 46% and then South America with 20%.

Hedge fund strategies expected to do well over 2012 by investment consultants were topped by event driven and special situation strategies with macro closely following behind. Macro was the preferred strategy for 30% of investors in the Preqin Hedge Fund Investor Profiles database, while event driven was popular with 19%.

The survey found that roughly 40% of hedge fund investors that are planning to add to their hedge fund portfolios over the next 12 month......................
