Altegris launches managed futures mutual fund with active fixed income component

California-based Altegris has added to its stable of managed futures based mutual funds, with the launch of the Altegris Futures Evolution Strategy Fund. Matt Osborne, Executive Vice President, and Co-portfolio manager for Altegris Advisors explained that this fund combines managed futures with actively managed fixed income, designed to produce a return, not just act as portfolio insurance.

"The thinking on this was to bring the next step in managed futures funds" he explains. "We wanted to have a fixed income component which was actively managed with potential to achieve substantial alpha."

The new fund has a focused and concentrated managed futures portfolio, predominantly managed by London-headquartered Winton Capital and supported by Stanley Fink’s ISAM. The fixed income part of the portfolio is supplied by DoubleLine Capital, an award-winning fixed income firm led by portfolio manager Jeffrey Gundlach. DoubleLine’s Core Portfolio is up 10% year to date.

Gundlach gains his returns using among other things mortgage-backed securities. "The fund has potential for more return and potential for more risk" says Osborne. "It has a very active best of breed fixed income manager being deployed and a CTA in Winton who has one of the best risk adjusted return profiles of any CTA."
