How to find a job in the investment industry nowadays

The current outlook for careers in the investment industry is tough, that is a given. Job seekers must be prepared to either look for opportunities within their own firm (if currently employed), consider less exciting specialisations (such as operations) and should think about ways to seriously stand out from the crowd. These were some of the commentaries heard at the CAIA Switzerland educational event in Geneva on Monday.

A CBI/PwC quarterly survey out last month said that the UK investment management sector might reduce its headcounts as confidence is declining - even though current performance has held up surprisingly well. "Numbers employed rose modestly (+5%) but at a far slower rate than had been expected (+20%). Looking ahead to the coming quarter, firms are expected to reduce headcount (-11%)" said Ian McCafferty, Chief Economic Adviser. Furthermore, "the continued uncertainty of sovereign debt markets and the risk of greater market turmoil are leading many securities traders to report downbeat predictions for volumes and revenues. Many in the industry expect that the full effects of the European sovereign debt crisis are yet to materialise and this is leading to a cautious outlook, with job losses looking li......................
