Social and political situations in Middle East and Africa offer opportunities for hedge funds

The political and social climates in the Middle East and Africa are causing investors to lose focus in the region, according to the latest HedgeFund.net’s "Regional Focus Report: Middle East & Africa Focused Funds". In its report, HedgeFund.net detailed that, historically, hedge fund managers who recognize emerging opportunities earlier than the rest, are benefited with good returns.

A case in point are the series of reports released from the Oakland Institute that accuses private investors, including hedge funds and institutional investors of "land grabbing" in Africa, especially agricultural land. The report also questioned if government interests are aligned with those of local residents and the long-term best use of the land.

According to the report published by the Oakland Institute, hedge funds and other foreign firms had acquired large swathes of African land "the size of France," to boost their profits in the food and biofuel sectors. Some of these lands were acquired without proper contracts, the report added and had displaced millions of poor farmers in the continent.

It added that the situation is creating insecurity in the global food system to make way for export commodities, like biofuels and cut flowe......................
