Presentation skills crucial if smaller hedge funds are to raise money successfully

It’s conference season and over at the GAIM conference, Benjamin Ball of presentation consultants Benjamin Ball Associates is back on the agenda, advising hedge fund managers on presentation skills for speaking at conferences and coping with the pressure of a speed networking event.

Ball believes that the problem of poor presentation skills is more prevalent among exactly the group of individuals with the most need of making a good impression – smaller fund managers. Often, he says, their commitment to their fund and technical knowledge outweighs their ability to deliver a clear and simple marketing message.

Ball offers a 10 point check list for speakers at conferences which he guarantees will help hapless presenters.

  • Objective: have you clarified the purpose of your talk in one line?
  • Message: have you a single simple message to get across?
  • Engagement: are you clear how to connect with the audience within the first 10 seconds?
  • StoryTelling: have you used lots of examples and stories?
  • Focus: have you made your talk about the audience rather than about you?
  • Delivery: do you look and sound excited, passionate, clear and honest?
  • Visual Aids: can you give your talk clearly without visual aids?
  • Visual Aids: could you have fewer, simpler slides?
