Asian markets are no longer 'emerging’, says hedge fund manager

The Asian markets have matured to such an extent that to continue calling the region an "emerging market" is missing a critical point. In fact, from a macro standpoint the longer-term weighting towards Asia is pretty obvious, said Jean-Christophe Blanc, a Senior Trader and Senior Portfolio Manager at CQS, an $11bn global multi-strategy asset management firm during the latest Opalesque Hong Kong Roundtable. Blanc stressed that while the Asian markets continue to mature, credit conditions are tightening. Therefore local companies will look at the international market for financing, leading to further growth and a stronger deepening of the high yield market than in the last couple of years.

"What I also find very interesting is the stage of the interest rate cycle. I think we could be at an important inflection point in terms of interest rates and what that means for markets and asset managers," he said.

Blanc added that as an investor in both equities and bonds, firms like CQS "are in effect a 'creditor’: "You have to ask yourself which countries today will now be more likely to be able to repay you and which are the ones with a higher risk of not repaying you? In this context, Asia is very well-positioned."
