Institutional investors to increase hedge fund teams and allocations, emerging markets attractive

Institutional investors’ appetite for hedge funds will increase in the next three years with many of them looking at emerging markets as an ideal vehicle, according to the latest survey by alternative investments data provider a Preqin.

In a statement, Preqin said that 94% of surveyed institutional investors indicated they would increase their hedge fund allocations in the next couple of years with 20% out of the 1,000 major institutional investors disclosing they are beefing up their hedge fund teams.

More interestingly, those who have no hedge funds team revealed they are developing in-house hedge fund specialist teams over the next three years.

Amy Benstad, Manager, Hedge Fund Data at Peqin said, "The hedge fund universe is difficult to negotiate, therefore it is no surprise that one-fifth of investors have expanded their investment teams over the past year. With many investors planning to increase their allocation to the asset class, as well as to move to a more direct style of investment over the next two or three years, the proportion of investors with hedge fund-specific teams is likely to grow further."
