Asia’s macro hedge funds to shine next decade – Opalesque TV

Danny Yong, one of the Founders and the Chief Investment Officer of Dymon Asia, a global macro hedge fund focusing on the Asian region, has had an impressive career including stints at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citadel, and then the launch of a hedge fund seeded by Tudor. But in a recent Opalesque TV interview, Yong discusses how his professional experiences were assisted by sheer luck, being at the right place at the right time, determination, and natural curiosity.

He started his career in the financial world in 1997 when he beat 997 other applicants for the spot at JP Morgan, but that was before the investment bank’s first choice candidate backed out, and the second candidate turned down the offer. So, at number three on the list, Yong bagged the job, and hasn’t looked back.

His next jump occurred after vacation in Hong Kong, where he met a guy who told him to try his luck at Goldman Sachs, an advice he took. Yong later moved on to Citadel before deciding to launch Dymon Asia which was eventually seeded by Tudor.

But surviving in the complex world of high finance, Yong said pure luck is not enough. You have to have a strong will and the competitive spirit to win. Being naturally curious is "extremely important," he says.
