Asian rich invest domestically where due diligence is easier and managers open and transparent

Asian investors, particularly the rich, prefer investing in Asia where due diligence is easier compared to their Western counterparts and where fund managers are more open and transparent. The quality of fund managers has also improved since 2008 or some say as early as 2002.

Those were the unified positions taken by Bryan Goh of DBS Bank and Peter Gibson, CEO of HMP Dynasty Family Wealth at the latest Opalesque Singapore Roundtable.

But while Goh and Gibson agree that Asia is a strong place in which to invest, offering solid opportunities, the two differ on when Asia actually became sound for investing and for doing business.

According to Goh, while Asian investors like to invest domestically, diversification is not always high on their agenda. "I think that the traditional solutions offered to provide diversification have instead provided dilution without the diversification. And as a result some of the trust with clients needs rebuilding. I'm taking a different approach with smaller managers, more esoteric strategies, so my colleagues the relationship managers have their work cut out." He explained that investor's perception that Asia is a place of opportunity is based on "very directional considerations." Goh ad......................
