"In my experience, if you try to eliminate all your risk in the portfolio, it is very hard to make money," says Philip King, CIO and Co-Founder of long/short equity manager Regal Funds Management during a recent Opalesque TV interview.
Running a market neutral strategy that has returned annualized gains of approximately 20%, King says that investors can sometimes confuse the idea of market neutral with low risk. "We distinguish between market neutral and low risk. We think the market is just one element of risk taking that you can have your fund exposed to. I have to take risk within the fund, as long as it is not what we call equity market risk," he explains.
The firm, which currently has a staff of 14 and recently opened a Singpore office is looking to expand its portfolio exposure to Asia as well as grow its asset base by breaking into the Australia investor base, which by and large has not enthusiastically embraced hedge funds. The winner of the Best Asia Relative Hedge Fund at the 2010 Asian Hedge Fund Awards the firm manages two investment strategies: the fundamental strategies which focus on Australia and use a bottom-up approach to stock selection; and the quantitative strategies that focus on long term and intraday factors across Asia.
