Constellation is designed to star in good and bad markets

Starting three years ago as a boutique consultancy for alternatives, Constellation Investment Consulting Corporation focused on building a compliance, operations and technology business. Considering the timing it was a bold move for Boris Onefater, president and chief executive officer of Constellation based in New York. “We started just before the crisis” he says, “and we knew it was coming so we built the business to flourish in good times, but also when the market takes a sudden downturn.”

In effect this meant that their opening business was largely helping managers wind down positions and assess operational risk issues within their portfolios. “It was operational risk management and litigation consulting work” says Onefater. Now that good times are returning a little, Constellation is helping funds start up and fulfilling obligations as an outsourced chief compliance officer, outsourced chief financial officer and roles in selection and implementation of technology.

Beyond compliance, Constellation undertakes a wide range of roles and projects within hedge funds. “We basically do everything post trade” he says. “The selection of and implementation of technical compliance, finance, accounting, due diligence and internal audits.”

The firm has 12 professionals serving a range of 35 clients who are mostly drawn from the hedge fund arena including some investors. Onefater says: “We work with a large endowment foundation ......................
