Author Ed Easterling predicts hedge funds will save investors from dismal long only returns

Author Ed Easterling has followed up his last book Unexpected Returns with Probable Outcomes, an examination of assumptions and outcomes in investment. Easterling is a senior fellow and advisory board member in the Alternative Investment Centre at Cox School of Business.

Talking about Probable Outcomes, Easterling says: “Although it’s not about alternatives or hedge funds specifically, it screams the need for them. This decade is set for well-below-average returns again and investors need hedge funds or they will sink with traditional long-only.”

Whereas Unexpected Returns introduced and explored the concepts behind secular stock market cycles (extended periods of above-average and below-average returns), Probable Outcomes delves into greater details and applies the concepts to assess the probable outcomes for stock market returns based upon a range of assumptions. The book explains why stock market returns and volatility are likely to repeat the course of the past decade (the 2000s). Probable Outcomes offers a closely detailed analysis of outcomes drawn from the fundamental principles that drive stock market returns. It does this using over 50 full colour charts, aiming to be not so much a ‘how to’ book, as an educational weapon for the investor.
