Specialist corporate finance firm Katalyst Partners predicts consolidation in alternatives space

The beginning of October last year saw the launch of Katalyst Partners, a corporate finance advisory firm specialising in the asset management industry. In an interview with Opalesque, founding partner, Ravi Anand, explains: "The thought behind our launch was that asset management is a specialist sector that requires specialist advice."

The partners include Anand, ex-New Star Asset Management and HSBC; Frank Ennis who specialises in corporate finance in the fund administration sector; Dexion Capital, principally known for their work in the listed hedge fund space and strong distribution network and professional services providers, Kinetic Partners who have over 1000 clients worldwide.

"We have brought together expert parties with deep knowledge who can add value for clients" says Anand. "The object is to provide a focussed service for the asset management industry as a whole but with an alternative bent, given our backgrounds."

Drivers for the steady stream of deals in the asset management space - both on the buy and sell side at the moment - include a need for distribution and greater institutionalisation of the alternatives world.

However, Anand believes that the flow of deals will not happen as quickly as some commentators predict. "Asset management is a personality business and there is a longer love-in required to consummate transactions, which are effectively a marriage" says Anand. "From the conversat......................
