The Asian region offers the best opportunities in terms of volatility inefficiencies and diversity in the various markets and instruments, but the challenge is finding the right manager for the job. Unfortunately, participants in the recent Opalesque Singapore Roundtable admit that the talent for this space is rare.
Asia's strong outlook is the reason why fund manager Lotus Peak Capital is based in Singapore, said Stephane Pizzo, Managing Partner at the firm.
"The opportunities for fund of funds are in the opportunities of the underlying managers... From a global standpoint, [Asia offers] the best opportunities in terms of volatility inefficiencies and diversity in the various markets and instruments... We think Asia is probably the best region to try to extract positive returns going forward," says Pizzo.
For his part, Lampros Vassiliou, Managing Partner at Teak Capital Partners, which focuses on special situations investments, said that Australia offers a strong outlook because of the number of special situation opportunities in that country. He also noted Indonesia and Thailand offer the same opportunities.
