South Africa expects more tourism and more foreign investors following the World Cup

How has South Africa done since this summer's World Cup? Opalesque has received some feed-back straight from the horse's mouth, and apparently, it is not doing too bad. Even though the after-event effect is bringing some sadness, South Africans generally expect more tourism and more foreign investors in the future as a direct result of the exposure that the country just got.

A total of 3,178,865 supporters attended the 64 matches of this tournament and in the process helped secure South Africa (SA) a place in the history books as the third-highest attended Soccer World Cup. Only the 1994 tournament in the US and the 2006 event in Germany had higher attendance figures, said Business Day.

Global audit and advisory firm Grant Thornton drew projections on the economic impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which were optimistic. The firm found that the net additional economic impact in 2010 would be 0.54% of GDP (comprised of an estimated 0.48% from net additional foreign tourism and 0.06% FIFA spending). This is significant, since GDP growth this year is estimated at 2.0 to 2.5 % of which 0.5% is accounted for by a single event.
