Fierce competition for assets drives focus on investor relations

Hedge funds have contributed to asset growth through strong performance and capital protection, but the asset outflows reported in April 2010 illustrate just how fragile the industry’s recovery still is.

“Recent flow weakness is surprising,” BarclayHedge CEO Sol Waksman said in conjunction with the reported $3.5bn industry asset outflow. “Industry performance has been stellar, and April is historically a strong month for subscriptions.” Such fierce competition for assets means that managers need to excel at more than just their strategy.

With transparency ranking at the top of investor demands for hedge fund improvements investor relations capabilities may be the second most important function within a fund. A firm’s investor relation capabilities will vary greatly depending on assets under management. However, with everything from bank to country club account statements available online, there is little to no excuse for hedge funds not to provide investors with immediate and direct access to the information on the fund and their investments.

Service providers have been working to help managers provide such web-based platforms.
