From Sagar Chakraverty, Opalesque Asia:
Barney Schauble is the managing director of Bermuda based Nephila Capital, a leading investment manager specializing in the reinsurance industry, investing in insurance-linked securities, catastrophe bonds, insurance swaps, and weather derivatives. In a recent video interview with Matthias Knab (part one here), the founder of Opalesque, Schauble talked about investing in catastrophe and weather risk.
In 1998, Nephila was set up in Bermuda to gather market intelligence through strong ties with the reinsurance industry and also to access the large concentration of reinsurance capital on the island, which is a key destination for buyers looking for protection against catastrophe and weather risk. Bermuda, a British colony in the Atlantic, is a popular offshore risk financing centre and home to 13 of the world’s biggest 40 reinsurers.
The name “Nephila” is inspired by a Bermudan folklore about the silk spider Nephila Clavipes, which has a unique ability to predict bad weather.
Today, Nephila manages nearly $2.5bn of assets and it has a team of 30. Man Investments owns 25% of Nephila Capital. About one-third of the team is focussed on operational side and the rest are into portfolio management and analytics.
