Understanding how a manager sailed through 2008 is a decisive factor for Texas-based family office Antares Capital

  "An analogy that brings to me is like a sailor setting his course on the sea. He has got a great sonar system, great maps and charts, he perhaps has got great GPS too, so he knows exactly where he is, knows what is ahead of him in the sea but his head is down and he not seeing the awesome black storm clouds building up in the horizon which are about to come on top of him. Some of those managers, we did not stay with. The managers who saw that (the 2008 crisis coming) changed their course and trimmed their exposure, sailed to safer territory."

This is how Terry Beneke, CIO of family office Antares Capital Management, explained the pivotal relevance of 2008 when assessing hedge funds and money managers to Opalesque's founder Matthias Knab during a recent video interview.

  A family office is a private company that manages investments and trusts for a wealthy family. The company's financial capital is the family's own wealth, often accumulated over many generations.

Do family offices hire a consultant? In the 90s, Beneke while working for an entrepreneurial family in Dallas, went into the world of alternatives investments to re-invest the capital churned out of businesses sold out by the family.
