As Japan is starting to look interesting again to the weary investor, the best investment opportunities in Japan can be found in beta, Long/Short equity, trend-following and bond issuance, according to participants at Opalesque's recent Tokyo roundtable (report here). And maybe also fundamental stock-picking.
Upbeat prospects
It is not just the population's aging and decline that have pushed investors away from Japan. They have found it hard to make money there in the last few years due to the debt issues and deflation too. Yet many people still are able to make money in Japan, said Rory Kennedy, COO for Rogers Investment Advisors, an alternative asset management firm headquartered in Tokyo, at the roundtable.
Japan's profile has risen of late. Kennedy noticed that 99% of all media coverage of Japan had been negative over the past couple of years, although since the past two or three months, as Europe and America were looking more risky and Chinese stocks were going down, 20% of the reports have looked more positive.
Opalesque has noticed that too.
