In an early April Research Report, entitled "Periphery is the Core", State Street Global Markets made the case for emerging markets. Citing the MSCI Emerging Markets outperformance compared to the World index by 12.9% in 1Q09 the State Street report says, "To the extent that institutional investors are drawing a distinction between core and periphery it is clear that the periphery is the new core."
$10bln New York-based firm Van Eck Global (www.vaneck.com) has announced the launch of a new strategy that will focus on the periphery. The Van Eck G-175 Strategies will target opportunities in 175 emerging market countries located in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
The firm has hired a three-person investment team that will be led by Portfolio Manager Eric Fine. Fine's background includes running the Global Emerging Markets Research Group, and founding and managing the Emerging Markets Proprietary Trading Group. He and his team will look to exploit opportunities in mispriced credit, interest rate, foreign exchange, and equity markets. The new vehicle will launch as an internal strategy and not be immediately available to the public.
