GAIM panel preview, looking at self regulation on both sides of the Atlantic, the impact of UK and US initiatives

Kirsten Bischoff, Opalesque New York: One of the featured panel discussions at the GAIM conference in Monaco this month (details here) will focus on the current environment of regulation, specifically the possibilities and probabilities of self regulation within the global hedge fund industry. The panel, which will be amongst the first to discuss the specifics of both the US Presidents Working Group and the UK Hedge Fund Standards Board will include Christopher Fawcett, CEO of Fauchier Partners and Director of the Hedge Fund Standards Board, and John Gaine, Special Counsel, Managed Funds Association and Henny Sender, International Financial Correspondent at the Financial Times. The group will be led by Graham Phillips, European Hedge Fund Practice Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Opalesque had a chance to speak with Phillips about the US and European hedge fund markets and the steps being taken towards self regulation and the GAIM panel discussion.

Can self-regulation head off government initiatives? As UK hedge funds are asked to sign off on the UK standards by December 31st of this year, and US hedge funds await the outcome of the consultation period for the Presidents Working Group standards, the question remains as to whether self regulation will successfully forestall any regulatory intervention.
