Opalesque Exclusive: Anew attempt to manage risk in the volatile India markets From Kirsten Bischoff, New York: As markets around the globe struggled through a volatile first quarter in 2008, the Tremont Hedge Fund Asia Index which reported -10.00% returns for QI08, made it obvious that some of those hardest hit were hedge funds with a regional focus on Asia. Even within the scope of that universe the world of the India markets have led investors of all types on a bumpy ride, with the major India indices falling -17.5% to -28.5% so far this year.

However, there are exceptions to every trend and one is the Anew India Opportunity Fund. Launched in November 2007 Anew follows an opportunistic long/short strategy and focuses on equities and convertibles in the India markets. So far, this young fund has been ably managing the risk of the region with ytd performance (as of April 21st) at approximately -3.6%. Opalesque recently spoke with portfolio manager Anu Sahai about the fund, the strategy, and launching into a turbulent environment.
