Opalesque Exclusive: African landscape (3) – Mergence to start an offshore hedge fund, looking for seeders, strategist maintains commodity market not a cyclical phenomenon

Mergence Africa Investments (MAI) is an independent, black-owned and managed specialist fund manager in South Africa, with about R3.8 billion assets under management, a three-year track record and over 65 years collective experience. MAI offers expertise in the following investment areas: absolute return funds; specialist equity funds; hedge funds; and socially responsible investments (SRI). Fabian de Beer, Mergence’s investment strategist, talked to Opalesque.
The two hedge funds
The two multi-strategy hedge funds, managed by Masimo Magerman, are the Uvuno fund and the Lerum fund. “They are not funds in which each person focuses on a strategy, like in an in-house FoFs,” Mr. de Beer said. “We look for opportunities across asset classes, derivatives, etc. We short in all portfolios.”
