New activist hedge fund `2.0` embraces blogs, YouTube videos, wikis, other social networking tools

Benedicte Gravrand, Geneva: Eric M. Jackson launched last week an activist long-bias fund with a North American focus called Ironfire Capital LLC (US and offshore). He talked to Opalesque about his avant-garde, hands-on approach to activism.

Investors’ revolution through blogs, YouTube, wikis and the press Eric Jackson holds a Ph.D. in Strategy from Columbia Business School and is also president of Jackson Leadership Systems, Inc., a leadership, strategy and governance consulting firm. His office is based in Naples, FLorida.

Last year, as an individual shareowner, he spearheaded two web-based activist campaigns for change focusing on Yahoo! and then Motorola. In both cases, the CEOs left the companies 5 months after the start of the campaigns. Over 2.1 million shares were pledged in support of his campaign aimed at Yahoo! and 600,000 shares were pledged in support of his Motorola campaign. It was the first time that an individual’s activist campaign was able to build up enough support from other shareowners through use of blogs (Eric Jackson’s blog site: Source), YouTube videos, wikis, and other social networking tools to have an impact on a company - as an activist hedge fund would.
