SVM prepares new fund, Highlander fund up 29.4% in 2007, AUM reach $1.6bln

Benedicte Gravrand, Geneva: SVM’s co-founder, Mr. McLean, gave Opalesque a peak preview of his 2008 launches and his market commentary on Europe.

Founded in 1990, SVM Asset Management is a firm based in Edinburgh, 100% owned by the three founding directors - with managers and staff participating in an equity scheme. SVM’s principal specialisation is UK and European equities investment as well as global fund of funds and has been managing alternative products since 1992. Colin McLean is a well-known figure in the UK’s financial community and, according to the FT, has earned a reputation for a contrarian approach.

We heard about his top hedge fund, the Ireland-domiciled SVM Highlander Fund earlier this month (coverage) which returned 29.4% for 2007, essentially due to short positions capitalising on “continued pressure on bank earnings and a further deterioration in consumer confidence and the credit environment”, on lenders’ reluctance and on “companies that are near to breaching their borrowing covenants.” The fund was launched in 1999 and annualised 13.9% (€) to December 07.
