India hedge fund specialist to expand into real estate, PE and beta products - is this the new trend in India investing?

From Benedicte Gravrand, Geneva: A firm based in Boston, with an illustrious name - Venus Capital Management - has been investing in Asia since the start in 1994 and now has a few projects up its sleeve for 2008. Do they reflect a new trend for India investors?

'We believe that this century will belong to Asia and that investors need to participate in that growth', the website says. Venus Capital currently manages US$690 million in 4 funds, two of which being successful hedge funds, all run from Boston with the help of a team of analysts in India. Vik Mehrotra, the founder and CEO of Venus Capital, has invested in India and Asia since 1989 and now focuses on strategies where volatility can be controlled.

The Venus Arbitrage Fund, which has many awards and nominations to its name, largely invests in a number of equity-oriented arbitrage strategies and manages around US$320 million. It has returned 13.63% YTD to October 07, 15.25% annualised since its launch in January 2003, outperforming its 10-12% target. Last month, it won the HFMWeek US Performance Awards for best relative value/arbitrage fund.

The Venus Special Situations Fund invests in event-driven arbitrage and special situation strategies, mainly in India, and manages US$106 million. It has returned 30.70% YTD to November 07 (28.52% annualised since its May 06 launch), also outperforming its 20% target.
