It was recently reported that some investors, in search for perfect due diligence, go as far as employing private investigators who interview hedge fund players, look into their personal lives, cross-check documents. It is true that nowadays, hedge funds are under great pressure to provide more transparency, as well as high levels of risk management, in order to attract investors especially the institutional type. This is the way it is going and the ultra-secretive maverick will no longer be persona grata in the alternative investment world, unless he or she can show stellar past performance – despite the fact that past performance is not an indicator of future performance. As the number of hedge funds has reached almost full capacity, the competition is rife - and investors have more than enough to choose from. Along with the development of the industry are the advisory shops which help hedge funds or investors. Laven Partners is one that advises both hedge fund managers and investors, that develops portfolios and runs a FoFs (as from January).
