Asean Small Cap Fund `excited` on coming market bounce-back

David Roes, CEO of Singapore-based Asean Investment Management, manager of the Asean Small Cap Fund, gave Opalesque his perspective on the Asian markets, the opportunities and outlook.

Market Evaluation: great opportunities in Indonesia and Thailand While this negative (high volatility and downward bias) situation may continue for a few months, the manager is excited about the value currently being exposed in such markets as Indonesia (many stocks are down 50% in the last four weeks, creating 50-75% return potential on a 12 month view). For the Thai market, the value is outstanding and will produce 12-18 month returns of over 40% from current levels. Although the manager will attempt to reduce the portfolio’s volatility over the near term, we cannot lose sight that on a 2-3 year view, this is a great buying opportunity…

Market outlook for Asian markets: well positioned for medium term growth and equity out-performance The manager is of the view that Asian markets are well positioned for medium term growth and equity out-performance. Although the often touted ‘decoupling’ may have been accelerated by recent arket movements, a slowing growth scenario emanating from the U.S. economy will have significant impact across Asian economies – particularly in the cyclical and export orientated sectors. This unwinding of a credit bubble will take a longer time to work its way through the world economy than many may expect and will continue to drive a fun......................
