Matthias Knab reports live from Beijing: I have never been so close to a Chinese National People's Congress, which just had its closing session in the Great Hall of the People on March 16, 2007. I have a larger article in the making, so for today I want to focus on a couple of technology news that caught my eye.

China to land astronauts on moon Chinese officials said that part of the third manned space foray which is planned for 2008 will be a “walking in space” excursion. From 2012 to 2017, Chinese missions will be collecting lunar samples and take them to earth; and finally in 15 years (2023), the nation will “surely achieve” to land astronauts on the moon“.

China to challenge Boeing, Airbus, to build large airplanes by 2020, proposes producing its own aircraft engines Chinadaily.com.cn reports China's top leaders have approved a program to build large commercial aircraft, lending crucial government support to plans to challenge the domination of Boeing and Airbus in the country's fast-growing aviation market.

A Cabinet meeting held last month approved "in principle" setting up a formal program for domestic to build large commercial aircraft, according to a statement seen Monday on the Web site of the State Council Information Office. It said the decision followed a report by a group set up six months earlier to research the feasibility of the project.
