France's hidden strengths in AI and machine learning

All nations offer their strengths and weaknesses, but one that is undisputed is the quality of the French scientists, claimed Guillaume Vidal, co-founder of French technology startup Walnut Algorithms at the latest Opalesque 2017 France Roundtable.

Vidal explained that some of the best hedge funds can be found in the U.S. or the UK, but all of them are using French quants. Looking at artificial intelligence (AI) applications, the situation is similar.

"One of our research advisors and business angel, Pierre Sermanet, is a three times ImageNet Competition winner and a Google Brain scientist. Yann LeCun, the Director of Facebook AI Research, is French. And recently, Nicolas Le Roux, who was one of the leading researchers at Criteo, was dragged to Google as well. I believe we should strive to keep some of our talented scientists, especially after training them so well," Vidal said.

Fortunately, investors are now starting to accept that France is an incredible destination. This is evidence by the fact that a big part of capital is now flowing into France, especially in deep tech, Vidal added.

He hopes that now after the presidential elections France can move forward supported by favorable policy-making, and that hopefully France will keep its brains because in investment management but also the......................
