Sententia Capital targets $100M

New York-based emerging manager Sententia Capital is opening its value strategy to outside investors. The firm is targeting $100 million in outside capital. The founders share class will be available without fees for the remainder of 2016.

Sententia is led by CIO Michael Zapata, a veteran who served nearly 10 years as a Navy SEAL from 2001 – 2010. He founded the Company in 2012 after finishing his MBA at Columbia University.

"We take a generalist approach to deep value investing in US equities with a slight long-bias," Zapata tells Opalesque in an interview. "This is the fifth year of the strategy which we have been running with friends and family money. We feel confident enough about the track record that we think the time is right to expand our investor base." According to Zapata, the strategy could perform well at as much as $500-700M AUM, but he's taking a more tempered approach to growth.

Sententia is opening on the heels of a successful equity investment round anchored by Mario Gabelli, CEO of Gabelli Asset Management Company Investors, a $39 billion investment firm headquartered in Rye, New York. Gabelli is a well known contrarian and value investor. Sententia's strategy is up approximately 20 percent through the third quarter of this year.
