Zenith refines long/short hedge fund list for Australian investors

In an interview with Opalesque, Daniel Liptak, head of alternative research at Melbourne-headquartered Zenith Investment Partners, commented "In Australia, hedge funds can advertise on the back of buses" a phenomenon which has led to a rise in demand for analysis of the available products, a need that has been met with the publication of Zeniths review of Australian long/short funds.

"Demand is growing from a number of parts of the market" Liptak said. "Long/short and market neutral strategies are being included in traditional equity portfolios in Australia and offshore." Liptak reports that traditional assets such as fixed income or equities are not delivering the returns that investors want at the moment. "Investors need their money to look after them in retirement so they are looking for better than cash and turning to long/short equity or market neutral products to reduce the risk in their equity portfolios."

Liptak is also finding increasing interest in investments based on distressed credit, high yield credit and distressed property in the US and Australia.
