When people think of hedge funds the first thoughts that come to mind are rarely positive. Often portrayed as purveyors of greed, hedge funds rival politicians in negative media coverage and associations in the popular imagination. However, there are some bright spots - like Hedge Funds Care - a global philanthropic organization inside the hedge fund industry that raises money to provide support for victims of child abuse.
Hedge Funds Care is holding its annual fundraising gala on Thursday night in New York City. The organization will be honoring Joe Torre, former manager of the New York Yankees, for his work to end the cycle of child abuse after having been a victim himself.
Hedge Funds Care was formed in 1998 in the wake of the Long Term Capital Management failure. The founder, Rob Davis wanted to improve the reputation of hedge funds through philanthropy while also providing value to the public. Davis had witnessed the effects of child abuse on his students in a previous career as an elementary school teacher.
The organization provides support to victims of child abuse through community grants that help raise awareness about child abuse, how to spot it and how to help victims. Grants also go to support victims themselves.
