BlueMountain snags Fir Tree's Troeller for private infrastructure

Wednesday, August 08, 2018
Opalesque Industry Update - BlueMountain Capital Management, a private diversified alternative asset management firm, today announced that Scott Troeller has joined the firm as a Portfolio Manager to source, evaluate, and execute infrastructure-related private investments, with an initial focus on energy, environmental, and telecommunications infrastructure in North America. In the newly-created position, Mr. Troeller will report to Andrew Feldstein, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer.

While BlueMountain has previously made significant private infrastructure investments, such as in Aligned Energy, a leading data center provider that recently received a strategic investment from Macquarie Infrastructure Partners, Mr. Troeller will be BlueMountain's first senior investment professional to focus exclusively upon infrastructure.

"One of our core objectives is to anticipate major change and position our investment capabilities to take advantage of it on behalf of our investors," said Mr. Feldstein. "We did that when the financial services industry went through a major transition following the financial crisis and we are doing it again now with private investment in infrastructure," he explained. "The focus upon private investment in infrastructure will complement our private investment strategies in healthcare, specialty finance, and special situations."

"BlueMountain's intellectual rigor, culture of collaboration, and success in carefully uncovering and capitalizing on long-term investment opportunities are some of the key reasons I am excited about this opportunity to work with the firm," said Mr. Troeller. "The broad mandate to invest across the capital structure and tailor flexible solutions to meet specific opportunities is a significant competitive advantage we bring to the market."

Mr. Troeller joins from Fir Tree Partners, where he was a Managing Director and focused on private equity investments. He was also a Managing Director of Titan Grove Holdings, the private investment arm of Fir Tree's founders. Prior to joining Fir Tree, Mr. Troeller spent over a decade at VSS where he was a General Partner and a member of the firm's Executive Committee. He was also a member of the VSS Investment Committees for its control-oriented private equity funds and its structured capital funds. During his career, he has completed more than 50 private platform, add-on, and financing transactions, and served on the boards of more than fifteen private and public portfolio companies in infrastructure, financial information, technology, and business services. More recently, he led the investments in infrastructure-related business such as NextEdge Networks, CiG Wireless, and sPower, which became the largest private solar utility in the U.S. during his leadership.

Mr. Troeller began his career at J.P. Morgan, where he focused on M&A and financings in technology, media, and telecommunications. He received a B.A. in Economics and Communications from Rutgers University.

Mr. Troeller's hiring comes as BlueMountain continues to build out its Private Capital investing strategies and capabilities. Last month, the firm hired Ameya Agge and Matt Jameson as senior investment professionals for its Private Healthcare team, led by Jim Pieri. Earlier this year, the firm added Murtaza Ali, Jigar Shah, and Suraj Ramdas to its Portfolio Company Management team, led by Jon Weber. The PCM team supports the firm's investments in healthcare, infrastructure, specialty finance, and special situations.
