Bainbridge Partners buys $20m stake in Alcazar's energy hedge fund

Thursday, February 05, 2015
Opalesque Industry Update, for New Managers - Bainbridge Partners, a London based alternative investments firm with $800 million in assets, has entered into a strategic relationship with Alcazar Investment Management Ltd, providing a $20 million investment into the Alcazar Renewables Generation Trading Strategy.

Alcazar, led by Joaquin Narro, offers an energy futures trading strategy that monetizes opportunities created by the sustained expansion of renewable energy markets. Alcazar focuses on regional electricity, coal and gas.

Joaquin Narro, who has a PhD in Nuclear Physics, is a veteran of the hedge fund industry. He co-founded Cumulus in 2005, where he was pivotal to establishing and managing their energy trading strategy. The trading program will be available to external clients via managed accounts, or via a soon-to- be-launched fund vehicle.

Antoine Haddad, CEO of Bainbridge commented:
“With renewables generation becoming the primary driver of electricity prices in Europe, we see this relationship as an unrivalled opportunity to generate alpha in a space where we expect greater inefficiencies, and also an excellent opportunity for investors looking to truly diversify their traditional portfolios.”

“We are impressed with Joaquin’s track record in these markets, both with the returns he has been able to deliver and the strategy’s consistently high Sharpe ratio. Alcazar has demonstrated an outstanding ability to run a successful portfolio, delivering strong returns in a tightly controlled risk framework.”

“Joaquin uses his deep understanding of the energy markets, gained working for leading electricity traders and producers, to build Alcazar’s proprietary models, and these are critical to the success of the strategy.” “Our allocation to Alcazar’s renewables trading strategy complements our historic allocation to energy trading strategies globally.”

Joaquin Narro, founder of Alcazar said:
“We see generation from renewable sources dominating the volatility of regional electricity and fuel prices. Our focused approach to fundamental research, combined with disciplined portfolio construction and risk management, allows us to have a low correlation to markets and protect against downside volatility, whilst capitalizing on opportunities for our investors.”

“This strategic relationship with Bainbridge is a major endorsement of the investment process and business principles of Alcazar.”

About Bainbridge Partners
Bainbridge Partners is an alternative investments specialist firm established in 2002, catering to clients who rely on Alpha/ Beta separation to construct their portfolios.

Bainbridge Partners’ activities fall under those two categories; 1) pure alpha generation via its APERIO range of multi-manager hedge fund products – focused on achieving the highest risk- adjusted return, while maintaining a net beta-neutral profile, a positive convexity of returns (crisis-resilience via a long volatility bias) and a high degree of liquidity, and 2) dynamic beta participation via its SEQUENT range of cross-asset, quantitative trading programs.

The firm manages assets for institutions, family offices, private banks and high net worth investors globally in commingled vehicles or dedicated managed accounts. Bainbridge is registered with and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the United Kingdom and also registered with the CFTC and NFA as a CPO and CTA in the U.S.
