Manny Roman Opalesque Industry Update - GLG, the discretionary investment manager of Man Group plc announced a number of senior hires to its macro and fixed income team. The appointments are part of a focus on expanding GLGs strategy as it relates to absolute return macro and fixed income. The overall macro and fixed income platform will be co-headed by Jamil Baz and Sudi Mariappa. As announced in October, Sudi joined GLG after a distinguished career at PIMCO, where he built and ran the firm's $80 billion international fixed-income offering. Sudi will focus on developing a GLG fixed income strategy and Jamil will continue to run GLGs macro strategy assisted by Ludovic Feuillet. Jamil also acts as GLGs Chief Investment Strategist. Sudi and Jamil will be assisted in building out GLGs macro and fixed-income platform with the following new hires:
Jamil Baz joined GLG in 2008. He is the lead portfolio manager on the GLG macro strategy and GLGs Chief Investment Strategist. Jamil was a Managing Director and a macro proprietary trader at Goldman Sachs, was instrumental in building PIMCOs new multi-asset global investment approach and was the Global Chief Investment Strategist of Deutsche Bank. Jamil has published extensively on topics such as Asset Allocation, Risk Premia, Term Structure, Option and Swap Pricing and Foreign Exchange Trading. Jamil holds degrees from HEC Paris, LSE (MSc), MIT(SM) and Harvard (AM, PhD). He teaches Financial Economics at Oxford University. Sudesh Mariappa (Sudi) joined GLG in September 2012 to develop and manage GLGs absolute return fixed income offering. Sudi worked at PIMCO from 2000 to 2010 and was promoted to Managing Director in 2003. He ran the Global Portfolio Team until 2008, managing an international team of investment managers. Under his oversight, AUM in global portfolios increased from $10bn to $85bn. From 2009 to 2010, Sudi was senior advisor to PIMCO, working closely with founder Bill Gross on the firms suite of hedge funds and also directed various risk, strategy and advisory projects. Before PIMCO, Sudi was a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, Tokyo. He also worked for Sumitomo Finance International and Long Term Capital Management in San Francisco and Salomon Brothers in Tokyo. Sudi holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from Cornell University. Ludovic Feuillet joined GLG in January 2010 as an asset manager working with Jamil Baz. Ludo has primary responsibility for the trade ideas, execution, market monitoring and risk management for GLGs macro strategy. Previously, he worked at Goldman Sachs where he started in the M&A division, before joining the Emerging Market trading group as a trader in the Structured Principal Investments team. He holds degrees from the Ecole Polytechnique (MSc), the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees (MSc) and an advanced degree in financial mathematics from Paris Sorbonne University. Kumaran Damodaran (DK) joined GLG in December 2012 as a portfolio manager working primarily with Sudi Mariappa on emerging markets within the new fixed-income platform. Previously he was an Executive Vice President and emerging markets portfolio manager at PIMCO. Prior to joining PIMCO in 2008, he was a senior vice president at Lehman Brothers, trading Latin American local currency derivatives. He previously held trading roles at Credit Suisse in Latin American and emerging European markets, spanning currency, interest rate and credit derivatives markets. He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cambridge University, where he was a British Marshall Scholar and a Graduate Fellow of the National Science Foundation. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. Driss Lamrani joined GLG in March 2012 as a strategist working on economic, political and geopolitical research. He has 15 years experience in investment banking, having worked as a structurer and a financial analyst covering the insurance-banking industry, as well as a consultant on ALM and regulation in particular. Driss has published articles on topics such as asset prices bubbles, the Eurozone and financial regulation. Driss graduated from Ecole Centrale Paris (1997) and the Societe Francaise des Analystes Financiers (2002). Brian Pinto will join GLG as Senior Macro Economist. Brian was previously a Senior Adviser in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network of the World Bank. His areas of policy expertise include economic growth, fiscal policy and sovereign debt, the economics of oil exporting countries and transition economics. At the World Bank, he had diverse experience, including in the International Finance Corporation and at the Banks own Treasury, as well as field experience in Poland and Russia. His publications have appeared in numerous academic journals. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as degrees from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and Loyola College, Madras University, India. Richard Bateson joined GLG in January as Senior Quantitative Analyst. Previously, he was head of a strategy within AHL, Mans industry leading quantitative managed futures manager. He joined AHL in 2011 from MGIM, an investment manager affiliated with Man Group, where he was CEO. He was previously a Managing Director of Royal Bank of Canada. He also held senior roles as Global Head of Product Development at Credit Lyonnais, VP at General Re Financial Products and AD at Mizuho. He is an Associate of the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance, Oxford University. He was an Honorary Senior Research Associate at the London Centre of Nanotechnology, University College London and has worked at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Institut Laue-Langevin and CERN.
