Qatar backed investment manager sets up in Geneva, launches European long/short hedge fund

Monday, April 07, 2014
Opalesque Industry Update - Aventicum Capital Management today announces the launch of its second investment business, Aventicum Alternative Equities, as the group expands its presence into Europe.

Aventicum Capital Management (“Aventicum”) is a multi-boutique investment management business based in Qatar and Switzerland. Aventicum provides investors with a distinctive range of investment strategies that seek to create long-term value in a fundamentally changing investment landscape.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Aventicum Alternative Equities will initially focus on offering investors an absolute return approach to European markets. It will be the second investment management business to be established under the Aventicum banner, and the first in Europe. In July 2013, Aventicum launched its Qatar-based Aventicum Frontier Markets business.

Aventicum Alternative Equities’ inaugural product will be the European Alpha Fund, a European focused long/short equity strategy that is based on bottom-up, fundamental analysis.

The Fund will be managed by Riccardo Cavo, CIO of Aventicum Alternative Equities, and Portfolio Managers Andrea Buda and Barry Kelly. The team of eight, which is headed by Luca Mengoni, already has over 45 years combined experience of working together and for 10 years has been successfully managing European long/short strategies.

Commenting on the launch of the European Alpha Fund, Luca Mengoni, Head of Aventicum Alternative Equities, said: “2014 will be an exciting year for stock-pickers in Europe, presenting myriad opportunities to generate strong returns whilst simultaneously managing risk. The European Alpha Fund is designed to do just that; giving institutional investors exposure to consistent absolute returns, irrespective of conditions in the market.

"Our team has been working together for many years and we have a proven track record in alpha generation, disciplined portfolio construction and risk management processes. As a result, we are well equipped to take advantage of the investment opportunities that we are currently seeing in Europe.”

Commenting on the announcement, Aladdin Hangari, CEO of Aventicum Capital Management, said: “We are pleased to announce the successful continuation and execution of our growth strategy with Aventicum Alternative Equities marking the group’s expansion into Europe. Luca Mengoni and his team possess a proven track record in building successful businesses and in creating true alpha over multiple market cycles.”

Aladdin Hangari added: “Over the course of the year, we will launch Aventicum’s UK-based presence. In line with our strategic vision, our primary focus will be on opportunities in Private Equity Real Estate and Emerging Markets Credit.”
