Shipping being the first truly global industry as well as one of the oldest ones has time series representative of freight costs going back to the middle of the 18th century. These show that through wars, changes in technologies, feasts and famines, freight rates have continued to be both cyclical and volatile. In addition they have often been poorly correlated with the state of the world economy.
