Assets managed by sovereign wealth funds are likely to grow 8 percent this year to $5.2 trillion after a 9 percent increase in 2011, a new report showed on Wednesday.

Sovereign wealth funds, which have traditionally taken a low profile, have become increasingly prominent in recent years. Assets under management in sovereign wealth funds increased 9% last year on 2010, up from $4.2 trillion to $4.8 trillion.
In comparison, hedge funds worldwide manage $1.8 trillion in assets, while private equity firms control $2.6 trillion. Sovereign wealth funds are heavily reining in their investment in risky new deals because they are sitting on huge losses from bets made during the crisis, according to three senior investment banking sources.

World’s largest sovereign wealth fund Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) has quietly acquired close to 2 per cent stake in HDFC Bank Ltd, the country’s most valued private lender, in what could have cost it around Rs 2,000 crore ($400 million), according to VCCircle estimates.
ADIA did not figure among HDFC Bank’s shareholders owning over 1 per cent stake as of September 2011, but held 1.94 per cent as on December 31, 2011. The government of Qatar is reported to have approached Saudi Oger about a deal to buy its 55 per cent stake in Oger Telecom, which owns a controlling 55 per cent stake in Turkey based Turk Telecom.

Fortis Healthcare (India) Ltd has acquired 85 per cent stake in Singapore’s RadLink-Asia Pte Ltd for S$62.9 million or $50 million (Rs 251 crore), the company has disclosed in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange. Fortis is backed by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC.

Hsieh Fu Hua has stepped down as a member of the Board of Temasek Holdings with effect from February 1, the Singapore investment company said in response to MediaCorp’s query.
Hsieh had earlier stepped down as president at Temasek at the end of September last year “to make room for personal priorities”. China Investment Corp. has allowed major Chinese banks in which it owns stakes to cut dividend ratios by five percentage points this year, the 21st Century Business Herald reported Thursday.

South Korea’s foreign reserves grew for the first time in three months in January due to a rise in conversion value of non-dollar denominated assets and an increase in investment profits, the central bank said Thursday.

The AU$73 billion Future Fund’s return for calendar year 2011 was 1.6%, and for the latter half of 2011 it was -3.1%, with declines in the domestic and global developed market-listed equities portfolios and the debt securities portfolio.
As of the end of the December quarter, the Australian equities portfolio stood at AU$7.8 billion, down from AU$8.28 billion at the end of June 2011. Gov. Sean Parnell is calling on the Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. to divest investments in companies that either do business in Iran or with Iran’s ruling government.
Parnell, in a letter to the corporation’s executive director, said some believe free markets, and not government policy, should direct investment choices.
