Macquarie Capital adds to FinTech team

Tuesday, October 23, 2018
Opalesque Industry Update - Macquarie Capital, the corporate advisory, capital markets and principal investment arm of Macquarie Group, today announced the hiring of two senior contributors to the financial technology vertical within its Financial Institutions Group. John Katzenmeyer has been appointed Managing Director and Eric Varney has been appointed Senior Vice President. Both will work alongside Peter Davis, US Head of Financial Technology at Macquarie Capital, as well as Macquarie Capital teams in Europe, Australia and Asia. Messrs. Katzenmeyer and Varney will be based in San Francisco.

"John's and Eric's leadership in M&A and capital markets transactions in payments, transaction processing, lending technology and other financial technology verticals is highly complementary to our existing franchise. We are excited to welcome them to the platform"

Mr. Katzenmeyer joins Macquarie Capital from Stifel Financial Corp., where he was Global Head of Financial Technology for the past five years. Prior to Stifel, Mr. Katzenmeyer led the financial technology practice at UBS and has previous experience at Banc of America Securities and Credit Suisse First Boston. Mr. Katzenmeyer has nearly 20 years of advisory experience in financial technology.

Mr. Varney also joins Macquarie Capital from Stifel, where he covered the financial technology sector for the past five years. Mr. Varney brings more than 12 years of experience in the technology and financial services sectors, with previous experience at UBS and Capital One.

"Financial technology firms are rapidly transforming financial services. Given the innovation and activity in the sector, strengthening our coverage has been a high priority," said Dan Miller, Co-Head of the US Financial Institutions Group at Macquarie Capital. "John and Eric bring deep sector expertise and advisory experience as well as strong relationships with both strategic and financial sponsor clients."

"John's and Eric's leadership in M&A and capital markets transactions in payments, transaction processing, lending technology and other financial technology verticals is highly complementary to our existing franchise. We are excited to welcome them to the platform," added Peter Davis, US Head of Financial Technology.

Messrs. Katzenmeyer and Varney have significant transaction and sector experience within financial technology and bring strong relationships across a broad range of financial technology companies and investors. In addition to M&A in the Americas, Macquarie Capital has been active on a number of cross-border fintech M&A transactions and in the last two years raised over $9.5 billion in debt for fintech clients, as well as invested alongside clients in three fintech companies.

Messrs. Davis, Katzenmeyer and Varney will also work closely with Macquarie Capital sector teams more broadly, especially in technology, services and insurance, to both serve broad client needs across the fintech sector and to leverage the deep expertise that Macquarie has established in these areas across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
